Crimestats.com

Several years ago, I had an idea for a service that would sell historical crime reports for a given apartment-complex or street. Update: my friend Adam points out that the Austin Police Department is already doing this.
It's even CALLED "Crimestats!"

It could have been done a little better, but it works. And they're giving the information away, whereas I thought to sell it. Good for them.

Here's the idea, as I envisioned it...

If this business were yours, you would send someone down to the police station each day to gather crime reports and enter them into your database. You would then market the service to people looking to move into a new house or apartment.

This would be ideal in a college town like Austin, Texas. You could advertise in the various guides that get sent to the parents of prospective students.

You could spice up the reports by including newspaper clippings (with photos) of the crimes, where possible.

Courtney says the service would be useful for finding out if the random screams and craziness we hear outside our window lead to actual police involvement.

Here are the 2001 crime statistics for the last two Austin neighborhoods I lived in. Guess in which neighborhood my house was twice robbed.
