National Silence Day

NEW YORK —National Silence Day: a day when people would do everything in their power to be silent. No talking, except when absolutely necessary; and then, in as quiet a voice as possible. No honking. No music or television. No garbage trucks. No construction equipment. No little Japanese cars with blatty oversized mufflers.
You get the idea. I guess loud pets and children would have to be doped up for the duration.

I wear earplugs everywhere; almost the same thing. I do get some looks when people talk so low that I have to remove one -- they realize I had my ears plugged during the first bit of conversation!
