Blackout!

The Great Blackout of '03 knocked out our power from 4:10 pm Thursday, Aug 14 to about 4:11 am, that night. By 9 pm Friday, most of Manhattan was back up. We got hot water the following Saturday morning, air conditioning on Sunday afternoon.
I heard the that "lights out" sound that you usually hear in the movies, when the bad guy turns out the lights in the echo-y warehouse, so the hero can't see. I expleted an expletive and checked the time on my PC. 4:10 pm -- after trading hours. A few weeks ago we'd had a partial blackout in our office during the middle of the trading day. Not fun.

Our company has a pretty stout Uniterruptible Power Supply that serves our office, so only the building lights went out. Our computers stayed on, giving us enough time to shut them down in a (semi) orderly fashion. We finished shutting down and making (desperate) contingency plans by about 6pm. It was not a good day for me to have skipped lunch.
